Maha Shivaratree

Maha Shivaratree

Mahashivratree is one of the most popular and crowd-puller religious ceremonies organised by Hindus in Mauritius. It is participated by some 300,000 devotees of all age group s and also by foreign visitors, especially from the Indian Diaspora. During the eight-day pilgrimage, the country is mobilised.  People, from every nook and corner of the island, flock to Grand Bassin, carrying Kanwars on shoulders or wheels, singing devotional songs all the way. South African Hindus are among those who participate along with Mauritians on this special occasion.
